{"id":43960,"date":"2013-10-25T15:04:06","date_gmt":"2013-10-25T12:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=43960"},"modified":"2013-10-25T15:04:06","modified_gmt":"2013-10-25T12:04:06","slug":"britain-storm-alerthurricane-strength-storm-comming-to-uk-breaking-news-43960","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/britain-storm-alerthurricane-strength-storm-comming-to-uk-breaking-news-43960\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain Storm Alert:Hurricane strength storm comming to UK \/ Breaking News"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43969\" title=\"Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-001\" alt=\"Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-001.jpg\" width=\"610\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-001.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-001-280x156.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/h1>\n<h1>Severe weather alerts have been issued amid fears Britain is about to be hit by the most powerful storm in years.<\/h1>\n<p>A series of wind, rain and flood alerts are now in place as forecasters predict gales of more than 80mph\u00a0&#8211; classed as hurricane strength.<\/p>\n<p>The Met Office warned people to &#8220;be prepared for the risk of falling trees as well as damage to buildings and other structures&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The storm is currently developing over the Atlantic and will potentially hit UK land on Sunday night and into Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Today, forecasters urged people to prepare for the storm, with some comparing its potential to the Great Storm of 1987 and record-breaking gales\u00a0in Wales in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Jo Wheeler said: &#8220;Late October is notorious for strong storms, with a wind gust of 124mph recorded in the Vale of Glamorgan in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Should this storm achieve its potential, it is likely to bring down trees and to cause damage to roads and buildings, possibly causing major transport disruption and power cuts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wheeler said the storm was due to develop over the Atlantic in the next 24 hours as a strong jet stream and warm air combine to create a deep low-pressure system.<\/p>\n<p>While its trajectory is unclear, there are fears it may hit land, wreaking chaos over England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43970\" title=\"Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-002\" alt=\"Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-002\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-002.jpg\" width=\"610\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-002.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Storm-Alert-Britain-Hurricane-Strength-Storm-UK-002-280x156.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If it does make land, it is likely to hit Wales and the South West first before sweeping east and touching most of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Exposed coasts in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Hampshire, West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent are most likely to feel the brunt of the winds.<\/p>\n<p>The storm could also miss land completely &#8211; sweeping instead through the English Channel.<\/p>\n<p>Met Office senior forecaster Helen Chivers said: &#8220;Winds of that strength are damaging winds &#8211; there will be a risk of damage to homes and trees and disruption to travel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not a storm you see every winter. The storm of 1987 is one, and the Burns day storm in January 1990 is another.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43971\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43971\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Great-Storm-1987-UK.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43971\" title=\"London Hurricane 1987\" alt=\"London Hurricane 1987\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Great-Storm-1987-UK.jpg\" width=\"610\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Great-Storm-1987-UK.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Great-Storm-1987-UK-280x156.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">London Hurricane 1987<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Atlantic storms of this type usually develop further west across the ocean, losing strength by the time they reach the UK and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>But this one is unusual in that it is expected to appear much closer to land, potentially moving across the country while it is in its most powerful phase.<\/p>\n<p>The storm is expected to strike two weeks later than the Great Storm of 1987, which left a trail of destruction on October 15 and 16.<\/p>\n<p>It flattened trees, knocked out power and left 22 people dead in England and France.<\/p>\n<p>Forecasters at the time famously failed to predict the severity of the storm.<\/p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #f00;\">Error, group does not exist!
