\"Somalia<\/a>Rescue officials in Somalia have said that a deadly cyclone storm has left more than 100 people dead in northeastern Puntland region of the country.<\/h1>\n

Local reporters say heavy rains were recorded in North Eastern part of the country as the tropical storm 03A swept through the Northern Coast of the country on Monday.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The cyclone storm named 03A has been developing in the northern Indian Ocean and has hit some coastal areas and inland in Puntland and areas affected include the Gulf of Aden and coastal areas of Bari and the Nugaal regions. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the International Disaster Database, EM-DAT, this is the deadliest tropical cyclone in Somalia’s history and is being tied with Tropical Cyclone ARB04 which occurred in Somalia 1994.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The local government has warned that hundreds more people are still missing and rescue operation will have to be intensified. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The situation has been described as disaster with entire villages destroyed, property including livestock, structures, boats and a dhow from Yemen were destroyed and officials are appealing for emergency international aid. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“A tropical cyclone storm has wreaked death and destruction, the storm brought high wind speeds and torrential rains, causing flash floods, information collected from coastal areas via irregular telephone contact over the past 48 hours indicates that up to 100 people might have been killed, while hundreds of other people remain unaccounted for\u2019\u2019, a statement from the Puntland government said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Puntland President, Abdirahman Mohamed Farole said the government is organizing relief efforts but also appealed for international support. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Preliminary information also indicates that homes, buildings, boats and entire villages have been destroyed and over 100,000 livestock lost, endangering the livelihoods of tens of thousands of local people, affected coastal areas are in need of emergency supplies of clean water, non-perishable foods, medicines, emergency shelter materials, and blankets\u2019\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Officials have therefore advised people to stay indoors and take the necessary precautions to reinforce infrastructures as the strong winds may lead to destruction of weak structures. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

People are confused and the situation is said to be getting worse in a country which has been driven by a civil war since the collapse of central government in 1991. The often lawless region is also home to numerous warlords, as well as for many years hosting pirate gangs who raided far out into the Indian Ocean. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Qaeda-linked Shabab are also based in Puntland, with bases in the rugged Golis Mountains, honeycombed with caves and difficult to access. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
