Violence against women has been going on unabated in Pakistan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

At least 56 women have been killed in Islamic republic of Pakistan for giving birth to girls this year, a leading human rights activist of the country has said.<\/h1>\n

Islamabad, Nov 26\/Nationalturk \u2013 In a startling revelation, a leading human rights activist of Pakistan has disclosed that 56 women have been killed in Islamic republic of Pakistan for giving birth to girls this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cA country where mothers are killed for giving birth to baby girls can\u2019t be called an ethical society,\u201d said Pakistan\u2019s noted human rights activist I A Rehman while addressing a function organised by All Pakistan Women\u2019s Association (APWA) in Lahore city of Pakistan\u2019s Punjab province.<\/p>\n

He said 56 women have been killed in Pakistan this year for giving birth to a girl rather than a boy.<\/p>\n

90 acid attacks on women from Jan 2012-Sept 2013<\/h2>\n

\u201cFrom January 2012 to September 2013, there were also 90 acid attacks on women. There were also 72 cases of burning women caused by other means, 491 cases of domestic violence, 344 cases of gang rape and 835 cases of violence,\u201d Rehman said.<\/p>\n

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was observed on Monday (November 25).<\/p>\n

Rehman took a dig at society for maintaining criminal silence over rape of young girls and violence on weaker sex<\/p>\n

He said in order to stop excesses and crime against women, it was must that equal access to education was provided to boys and girls.<\/p>\n

He also favoured introduction of uniform education system for the rich and poor of the country. \u201cThis would help bring about positive changes in Pakistan\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018There should be zero tolerance towards violence against women\u2019<\/h3>\n

\u201cThere should be zero tolerance policy towards violence against women in Pakistan and government should implement the law. Pakistan had ratified UN Convention for elimination of all forms of discrimination against Women but had not fully implemented it. The government should take concrete measures to implement it,\u201d said Pakistan Supreme Court lawyer Shamsa Ali.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova in her message on the occasion of the International Day for elimination of violence against women said all women and girls must live free of fear and violence.<\/p>\n
