But he says that if his team are paired with one of them in the last 16, he believes the Spanish clubs will be worried.

Such confidence is based not just on the astonishing way City are scoring – 72 now in all competitions, with 47 in the Premier League – but the fact that those goals have come against the top teams as well as the weaker ones and just about anyone in Manuel Pellegrini’s cavalier outfit is capable of finding the net.

Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho became the 12th different scorer City have had this season with his double in this demolition of Arsenal.

Nasri said: “No, I’m not worried about who we get in the draw. Put it this way, I don’t think Real or Barcelona will be happy to play Manchester City.

“But if I had to pick the draw of course I would go for Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid or Borussia Dortmund. I don’t want to play Real or Barca: but if we do get them, they will be worried about us.

“Everyone around Europe will look at this game. And when you see a team perform like we did, on top of what we did against Bayern in midweek, you are bound to be a little bit worried about playing us. When you look at the squads of the teams left in the competition you cannot regard us as underdogs.”

City are not just flat-track bullies. Six against Tottenham and the Gunners, four against Manchester United and three against Bayern with what was effectively their second XI underline they do it on the big occasions. And they are not just reliant on leading scorer Sergio Aguero. The three goals in Munich and four of the six against Arsenal were scored without the Argentina striker.

That is just as well, because Aguero is facing several weeks out after tearing a calf muscle early in the second half. Nasri added: “In this team any player can score. We have so much quality. Fernandinho scored twice and he is a defensive midfielder who plays box to box.

“And we have defenders who can score from a free-kick or a corner. So the boss has so many attacking options.”

“You saw in midweek in Munich that the manager changed the team a lot and we still performed well so he knows he has a big squad that he can rotate any time so that we can stay fresh.”

Nasri says City’s biggest opponent, certainly in the league, could turn out to be themselves.

He admits their dodgy away results can be put down to having the wrong mental attitude at Cardiff, Aston Villa and Sunderland.

“When we play a big game it is easy to get motivation,” he said. “Big players will always respond when it is a big game. We seem to perform when we play one of the big teams. Now, though, we have to do it away from home as well.

City will have to go some to beat Aston Villa’s top-flight record of 128 goals – in 42 games in 1930-31. But they are on course to beat Chelsea’s Premier League record of 103.

Nasri added: “We are going to try and break the records. But we don’t have an obsession about scoring five, six or seven goals every game. We just try to do our job and win. But we have so much attacking ability that when we have chances we score.”

It was only the third time during the Premier-League era that Arsenal have shipped five or more goals.

And, to make matters worse for them, midfielder Jack Wilshere is facing a one-match ban from the FA for making a one-finger gesture at City fans.

Manchester City vs Arsenal Match Stats

Man City: Pantilimon 6, Zabaleta 8, Demichelis 7, Kompany 8, Clichy 6, Nasri 7 (Javi Garcia 90), Fernandinho 9, Toure7 , Silva 8 (Milner 71, 7), Aguero 7 (Jesus Navas 50, 7), Negredo 7.

Subs not used: Hart, Lescott, Dzeko, Kolarov.

Booked: Kompany, SIlva.

Goals: Aguero 14, Negredo 39, Fernandinho 50, 88, Silva 66, Yaya Toure 90.

Arsenal: Szczesny 6, Sagna 5, Mertesacker 7, Koscielny 6 (Vermaelen 42, 6), Monreal 6, Ramsey 6, Flamini 6 (Gnabry 72, 6), Walcott 7, Ozil 6, Wilshere 7, Giroud 6 (Bendtner 76, 6).

Subs not used: Rosicky, Arteta, Cazorla, Fabianski.

Booked: Szczesny.

Goals: Walcott 31, 63, Mertesacker 90.

Ref: Martin Atkinson 8.

Manchester City 6 Arsenal 3 Match Video

[media id=1010 width=610 height=340]

Tottenham 0 Liverpool 5:There is no competation in London Liverpool absolutely crash

Yesterday, the answer was spelled out in agonising and unrelenting fashion to Andre Villas-Boas and the despairing Tottenham crowd.

After the game, the Spurs manager went arm-in-arm down the tunnel with Luis Suarez, whose double took him to 17 goals – the most ever scored by a Liverpool player before Christmas.

With hindsight, if the Portuguese had kept as tight a hold on Gareth Bale during the transfer window, perhaps the tale of yesterday’s game – and the season as a whole – might have been different.

Jordan Henderson’s man-of-the-match award was no more than he deserved, but he had benefited from being able to command midfield calmly against the jittery berserkers arrayed against him. The simple reason for that panic – Suarez. All £40million-and-a-pound’s worth of him.

Bale used to do the same here – single-handedly winning games or stampeding opponents into losing them just by his presence.

Last season’s talisman is long gone, though. Very long gone.

In Bale’s place there is a stronger unit of talented professionals who are better balanced to bully the lesser teams in the Premier League out of the points. Nobody, though, to cause the jitters against more illustrious sides.

So from seven games against the rest of the top eight, Spurs have managed just three points. To win those Champions League qualification ‘six-point’ affairs, you need something different. Class. It is a rare commodity and one to be cherished, perhaps at all costs. Even a world-record transfer fee.

The value of Liverpool retaining that rare class was summed up in the fourth goal, clipped effortlessly over Hugo Lloris by Suarez and into the empty net.

A makeshift centre-back pairing of Michael Dawson and Etienne Capoue had looked uncomfortable from the first whistle. Left-back Kyle Naughton, further tormented by Raheem Sterling’s pace, was unceremoniously substituted at half-time. By then, it had been Dawson’s slip on the edge of the box which opened the floodgates. Henderson’s lightning-quick reaction teed up Suarez, who slithered around Kyle Walker’s lunge and slid the ball into the net.

He could have had a second and then Philippe Coutinho rattled the home bar.

Spurs finally had a decent chance with a Nacer Chadli header that went wastefully over – as it was, the home side would not produce a single effort on target. Meanwhile, at the other end, it quickly became a matter of how many Liverpool would rattle in. A kamikaze run from the area from Lloris should have been punished by Suarez.

It was only a temporary reprieve as, after a more impressive double save minutes later from Henderson and Suarez, Lloris could not prevent Henderson making it third-time lucky with a low drive.

The second half demanded a fighting response from the home side – unfortunately for Spurs, it was an inappropriate one.

Paulinho’s studs-up, stomach-high foul on Suarez spelled out his frustration but also gave referee Jonathan Moss due cause to produce a red card. Meanwhile, Liverpool just carried on cutting Tottenham to shreds.

Henderson’s back-heel gave Suarez time to float a gentle cross for a delighted Jon Flanagan to hammer in at the far post for the third, before Suarez, as previously discussed, added that fourth himself.

And finally? Yes inevitably Suarez was involved again, teeing up Sterling to rifle in a goal which, by this stage, the Liverpool players barely bothered to celebrate.

It made it two goals and three assists for Suarez overall. Steven Gerrard, sat injured in the Sky pundit’s box, said: “We will have to enjoy him while we have got him, because I would have to say the big guns will be circling.” As well as taking three points from White Hart Lane for the first time in seven years, perhaps Liverpool will take an even fiercer determination to keep those “big guns” at bay for as long as possible.

Tottenham vs Liverpool Match Stats

Tottenham: Lloris 4, Walker 5, Capoue 3, Dawson 3, Naughton 4 (Fryers 45, 4), Sandro 3 (Holtby 30, 5), Dembele 3 (Townsend 61, 4), Lennon 4, Paulinho 3, Chadli 4, Soldado 3.

Subs: Lamela, Defoe, Sigurdsson, Friedel.

Yellow: Walker, Dawson, Holtby

Red: Paulinho

Manager: Andre Villas-Boas 3

Liverpool: Mignolet 7, Johnson 7, Skrtel 7, Sakho 7, Flanagan 8, Lucas 7 (Luis Alberto 79, 7), Allen 7, Henderson 8, Coutinho 8 (Moses 90, 6), Sterling 7, Suarez 9.

Subs: Brad Jones, Toure, Agger, Alberto, Aspas, Kelly.

Goals: Suarez 18, Henderson 40, Flanagan 75, Suarez 84, Sterling 89

Manager: Brendan Rodgers 9

Man of the Match: Luis Suarez

Referee: Jon Moss (W Yorkshire)

Attendance: 36,069

Tottenham 0 Liverpool 5 Match Video

[media id=1011 width=610 height=340]

Aston Villa 0 Manchester United 3:Welbeck carried United

Sir Alex Ferguson always had it easy at Villa Park – go goals down, come back and win: it never mattered. And this was one of the easiest of all United’s victories, just when Moyes needed it.

West Brom, Everton and Newcastle have all broken daunting losing records at Old Trafford. But Villa Park is Manchester United’s second home, and the hosts never looked like upsetting that.

Take away the first 15 minutes when Villa were eager, purposeful and paying no heed to their dreadful home record, and this was yet another blissful away day.

If it had been sunny rather than dull and drizzly, you could well have said that United were basking. Danny Welbeck even scored his first Premier League goals since August.

Villa were just so limp in their challenge that their home league record against United since 1995 now reads, dismally, no wins in 18 games.

Overall, it is three victories in 43 league and cup ties. Moyes could not be at a better place for recuperation after the battering he has been taking.

United were facing three successive league defeats for the first time in 12 years when they arrived. They left with not even a hint that it had been a possibility and a Christmas programme ahead that could redeem their position as title contenders.

“We are Manchester United, we are expected to win,” said Moyes. “I’ve heard a number of times, ‘that could be a platform to go forward’ – all I can do is try and win the next game.”

That is likely to be a much tougher and uncompromising trip to the Britannia Stadium, against Stoke on Wednesday for a place in the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup, a step closer to a trophy in his first United season.

There are still doubts about Moyes’ team – but Villa exploited none of them.

Home form is a constant problem for Villa with five defeats out of eight so far and only six goals scored. At no time, once this game was out of its infancy, did they look like improving on that. “They say that a team’s home home form must be good if you are going to achieve anything,” said Paul Lambert. “We have to do something to rectify that.”

Villa’s fans have got so used to it they don’t even protest. They just leave early and head home.

Boss Lambert and club owner Randy Lerner are getting off lightly. Wonder what former owner-chairman Doug Ellis makes of it after all the abuse he took? And the supporters could have left this one as soon as Welbeck scored.

His two goals came in three minutes, the first of them after a quarter of an hour.

Nathan Baker gave the ball away to put United on the attack and after Adnan Januzaj had hit the crossbar with a header from Rafael’s cross Welbeck took the rebound to score.

Three minutes later United swept away again down the right side, where full-back Antonio Luna had a dreadful time. Antonio Valencia, who was impressive throughout, crossed and Welbeck was there first to convert a right-footed shot smartly.

“The criticism of Welbeck is always that he doesn’t score enough goals,” said Moyes. “I was pleased with him. Those were poacher’s goals. He needs more like that.”

Welbeck was ultimately frustrated that he did not go on to get a hat-trick, an omission given how much on top United were.

But in the end, Luna capped his wretched afternoon by giving away the ball from a Villa throw-in.

Wayne Rooney benefited seven minutes into the second half, driving at Villa, then playing in Tom Cleverley as he arrived on his right side and drove in. “I thought we started the game well, the best we have for a number of weeks,” said Lambert. “Everything looked decent, but it was disappointing the goals we conceded. Manchester United were clinical though.”

David Moyes will enjoy hearing that assessment.

Aston Villa vs Manchester United Match Stats

Aston Villa (4-1-4-1): Guzan 6; Lowton 5, Baker 5, Clark 5, Luna 4; Westwood 6; Albrighton 6, Sylla 4 (Weimann 62, 5), El Ahmadi 5 (Bacuna 87), Agbonlahor 5; Benteke 5 (Kozak 79).

Subs not used: Steer, Bowery, Gardner, Tonev.

Booked: Agbonlahor, Lowton, Clark, Baker.

Manager: Paul Lambert 5.

Man United (4-2-3-1): De Gea 6; Rafael 7, Evans 6, Jones 6, Evra 6; Cleverley 7, Giggs 6 (Fletcher 70, 5); Valencia 8, Rooney 8 (Zaha 84), Januzaj 7 (Young 70, 5); Welbeck 8.

Subs not used: Lindegaard, Ferdinand, Fabio, Buttner.

Goals: Welbeck 15,17, Cleverly 52

Booked: De Gea, Welbeck.

Manager: David Moyes 7.

Man of the Match: Welbeck

Referee: Lee Mason 6

Attendance: 42,682

Aston Villa 0 Manchester United 3 Match Video

[media id=1012 width=610 height=340]

English Premier League Match Week 16 Results

Saturday, 14 December

Man City 6 Arsenal 3

West Ham 0 Sunderland 0

Chelsea 2 Crystal Palace 1

Everton 4 Fulham 1

Cardiff City 1 West Brom 0

Newcastle 1 Southampton 1

Hull City 0 Stoke City 0

Sunday, 15 December

Norwich City 1 Swansea City 1

Aston Villa 0 Man United 3

Tottenham 0 Liverpool 5

Barclays Premier League Match Week 16 Table

<!-- Error, Advert is not available at this time due to schedule/geolocation restrictions!
