{"id":47400,"date":"2014-02-17T13:41:45","date_gmt":"2014-02-17T11:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=47400"},"modified":"2014-02-17T13:41:45","modified_gmt":"2014-02-17T11:41:45","slug":"ethiopian-airlines-hijackedco-pilot-hijacked-plane-breaking-news-47400","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/ethiopian-airlines-hijackedco-pilot-hijacked-plane-breaking-news-47400\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopian Airlines Hijacked:Co-Pilot hijacked plane \/ Breaking News"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Ethiopian-Airlines-Hijacked-Co-Pilot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47412\" title=\"Ethiopian-Airlines-Hijacked-Co-Pilot.\" alt=\"Ethiopian-Airlines-Hijacked-Co-Pilot.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Ethiopian-Airlines-Hijacked-Co-Pilot.jpg\" width=\"610\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Ethiopian-Airlines-Hijacked-Co-Pilot.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Ethiopian-Airlines-Hijacked-Co-Pilot-280x157.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/h1>\n<h1>An Ethiopian Airlines co-pilot hijacked his own plane, bound for Rome, and flew it to Geneva where he is now seeking asylum.<\/h1>\n<p>The Co-Pilot, an Ethiopian, seized control of the Boeing 767 when the pilot went to the toilet.<\/p>\n<p>Flight ET702 with 202 passengers and crew on board had taken off from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.<\/p>\n<p>After landing in the Swiss city at about 5am, the co-pilot used a rope to climb down from a cockpit window.<\/p>\n<p>He surrendered to police and asked for asylum in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said no one on the flight was injured.<\/p>\n<p>Geneva airport chief executive Robert Deillon told reporters the suspect &#8220;wanted asylum in Switzerland&#8221; and &#8220;that&#8217;s the motivation of the hijacking&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Swiss federal authorities are now investigating the incident and are set to press charges that could carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot is reported to have issued a mayday as the plane flew over Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>FlightRadar 24 &#8211; an app for mobile devices &#8211; showed the flight circling over Geneva several times before landing.<\/p>\n<p>The Boeing 767-300 plane had 20 minutes of fuel left when it landed.<\/p>\n<p>Journalists, in Geneva, said the airport had not yet opened when the plane hit the runway &#8211; and passengers had to wait until it did before disembarking.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;It must have been a very terrifying experience for the passengers on board.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems to have been the case that passengers had to wait until the airport opened.
