Indian writer and journalist\u00a0 Khushwant Singh died on Thursday at the age of 99.<\/h1>\n

New Delhi, March 20\/Nationalturk \u2013 Noted and celebrated Indian writer and journalist\u00a0 Khushwant Singh died on Thursday at the age of 99.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe writer breathed his last at 0055 hours,\u201d his son and journalist, Rahul Singh said.<\/p>\n

He said Khushwant Singh passed away very peacefully at his residence in Sujan Singh Park, New Delhi.<\/p>\n

Rahul said his father had some breathing problems. \u201cThe cremation ceremony for the writer will be held this evening at Lodi Crematorium.\u201d<\/p>\n

Singh was born in 1915 in Pakistan<\/h2>\n

Singh was born on February 2, 1915, in Hadali, now in Pakistan’s Punjab.<\/p>\n

He was the founder-editor of Yojana and also edited many Indian newspapers including The Illustrated Weekly of India, the National Herald and Hindustan Times.<\/p>\n

Singh was known for his witty and candid writing that carried him through the 1960s, 1970s.<\/p>\n

He has nearly 40 books to his credit, which include more than half a dozen short story collections.<\/p>\n

His seminal work \u201cTrain to Pakistan\u201d (1956), a tale of the trauma of partition of Indian sub-continent, still remains on the bestseller lists.<\/p>\n

His last book ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ridiculous’ was released in October 2013.<\/p>\n

He was a gifted author: Indian PM<\/h3>\n

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while condoling his death called him a “gifted author, candid commentator and a dear friend”.<\/p>\n

“He lived a truly creative life,\u201d he said in his condolence message.<\/p>\n

After the news about his death spread, there were frenzy of messages, tributes and anecdotes on social media.<\/p>\n

His autobiography, “Truth, Love and a Little Malice”, was published by Penguin Books in 2002.<\/p>\n

Singh was a Member of Parliament from 1980 to 1986.<\/p>\n
