Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag will take over as 26th<\/sup> chief of 1.3 million strong Indian army on Thursday.<\/h1>\n

New Delhi, July 31\/Nationalturk: Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag will take over as chief of Indian army on Thursday.<\/p>\n

59-year-old Suhag will become India’s 26th Army Chief. He was service as Vice Chief of Indian army.<\/p>\n

Indian army\u2019s present chief General Bikram Singh will retire today. The farewell ceremony for the outgoing Army Chief will be held this evening and after that Suhag will take over as chief of Indian army.<\/p>\n

Suhag was named as army chief in May by the outgoing Congress-led government in India.<\/p>\n

59-year-old Lt. Gen. Suhag, a Gurkha officer had participated in the 1987 Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) operation in Sri Lanka. \u00a0He will have a tenure of 30 months as 26th Chief of India 1.3 million strong army.<\/p>\n

According to media reports, Indian army\u2019s new chief was a Company Commander in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka in 1987 and commanded 53 Infantry Brigade engaged in counter insurgency operations in strife-hit Indian administered Kashmir from July 2003 to March 2005.<\/p>\n

Suhag had joined National Defence Academy in 1970 and was commissioned into 4\/5 GR (FF) in June 1974.<\/p>\n

Lt Gen Suhaq was at the centre of a controversy after a vigilance ban on him by former army chief General VK Singh, now India\u2019s junior minister of External \u00a0Affairs Ministry, in connection with an intelligence operation in India\u2019s North Eastern state of Assam.
\nThe ban was, however, lifted after the present army chief General Bikram Singh took over in May, 2012.<\/p>\n
