{"id":52900,"date":"2014-08-06T12:08:05","date_gmt":"2014-08-06T09:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=52900"},"modified":"2014-08-06T12:08:05","modified_gmt":"2014-08-06T09:08:05","slug":"india-not-to-abolish-death-penalty-52900","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/india-not-to-abolish-death-penalty-52900\/","title":{"rendered":"India not to abolish death penalty"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_52903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52903\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-52903\" alt=\"India not to abolish death penalty.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Death-Penalty-India-Nationalturk-6.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Death-Penalty-India-Nationalturk-6.jpg 275w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Death-Penalty-India-Nationalturk-6-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">India not to abolish death penalty.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1>Indian government has said country won\u2019t abolish death penalty.<\/h1>\n<p>New Delhi, Aug 6\/Nationalturk \u2013 Turning down pleas of human rights groups and activists, Indian government has said country won\u2019t abolish death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt present, there is no proposal in Ministry of Home Affairs to amend the Indian Penal Code, 1860 to abolish capital punishment in the country,\u201d Indian Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju informed lawmakers in Lok Sabha, lower house of Indian parliament.<\/p>\n<p>In recent past, India has hanged two convicts for terrorism links.<\/p>\n<p>An alleged Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab involved in 26\/11 (Terror attacks in Mumbai) and a citizen of Indian administered Kashmir Mohammad Afzal Guru allegedly involved in terror attack on Indian parliament were hanged in secretly.<\/p>\n<p>There have been calls from human rights groups and activists that death penalty should not be awarded and if necessary, then awarded in rare of rare cases.<\/p>\n<h2>HR groups demand commuting of death sentence of convicts<\/h2>\n<p>The HR groups have been urging Indian government to commute death sentence of convicts in life imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>Indian minister said Law Commission of India has posted a Consultation Paper on capital punishment on its website in the May, 2014 seeking suggestions\/ comments on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>India retains the death penalty as punishment for a number of crimes including murder, kidnapping, terrorism, desertion, inducement to suicide of a minor or a mentally-retarded person and has more recently in 2013 come to include the offence of rape in certain circumstances. It is mandatory for second convictions for drug trafficking offences.<\/p>\n<p>Death sentences are carried out by hanging.
