{"id":54287,"date":"2014-09-22T17:03:19","date_gmt":"2014-09-22T14:03:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=54287"},"modified":"2014-09-22T17:33:24","modified_gmt":"2014-09-22T14:33:24","slug":"boko-haram-market-attack-dozens-die-market-nigeria-54287","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/boko-haram-market-attack-dozens-die-market-nigeria-54287\/","title":{"rendered":"Boko Haram Market Attack: Dozens Die in Boko Haram Attack on a Market in Northeastern Nigeria \/ Africa News"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/nigeriamainokmaiduguri4640914.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-54297 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/nigeriamainokmaiduguri4640914.jpg\" alt=\"nigeriamainokmaiduguri4640914\" width=\"464\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/nigeriamainokmaiduguri4640914.jpg 464w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/nigeriamainokmaiduguri4640914-280x157.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a>Residents in the remote town of Mainok in northeastern Nigeria have been fleeing violence by Boko Haram militants on the town over the weekend.<\/h1>\n<p>Mainok is located some 56 km away from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State which has been the epicenter for Boko Haram militants in recent months.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The militants stormed the town\u2019s market on Friday afternoon, looting food and shooting indiscriminately at civilians.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Soldiers beings stationed at the market to protect civilians in case of such attacks were said to have fled the market when the militants arrived.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Some of those running for safety during the attack were said to have been killed after being hit by cars speeding away from the area.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The death toll is still not yet clear but some residents who escaped the attack told local reporters that more than 50 people might have been killed in the attack. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">But reinforcement team from the Nigerian army which was dispatched to the area is still fighting the militants for control of the town. There was fighting on Saturday and Sunday, displacing many residents.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Haram has consolidated its recent campaign of annexing territory for its Islamic Caliphate State. The State of Borno is firmly under its control. All government troops\u2019 station in the area has pulled out, leaving the area to the mercy of the militants according to local reports. Boko Haram has also taken some towns in the State of Adamawa as well.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Boko Haram five-year insurgency has intensified in recent months despite the deployment of thousands of extra troops to the worst-affected areas in the northeast by the Nigerian government.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said that Boko Haram has killed more than 3,000 civilians this year alone.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Political analysts say this year is the worse year for Nigeria since Boko Haram began its armed insurgency in 2009.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Boko Haram is a Hausa language which translates to mean &#8220;Western education is forbidden&#8221; and it sees schools and colleges as a symbol of Western culture in Nigeria.
