The Kenyan long distance runner, Dennis Kimetto has broken the marathon world record in Berlin on Sunday.<\/h1>\n

Race in a time of two hours, two minutes and 57 seconds (2:02:57).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kimetto powered through the final stretch close to Brandenburg Gate to clock a world best, winning many hearts that were presents to witness the marathon and those who watched the event on television.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The previous world record was set by his fellow Kenyan, Wilson Kipsang in 2013 at the same venue in Berlin with a time of two hours, three minutes and twenty-three seconds (2:03:23). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Marathon commentators say the 30-year-old just have three miles remaining to become the first man to run a marathon in less than two hours.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2013, Kimetto won marathons in Tokyo (Japan) and Boston (United States) and had promised before the race on Sunday to set a new world record.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He told reporters after the race that he believed that he could break the record even during the time he was in the course running the race.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I feel good because I won a very tough race, I felt good from the start and in the last few miles I felt I could do it and break the record,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kimetto who used to run local marathon competitions in Kenya stopped running and decided to tend to his farm but had a second thought and returned to pursue his career. He said has now left his farm for his mother and wife to attend to as he concentrates on his running career.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dennis Kimetto won the 2013 Tokyo Marathon with a new course record time of two hours, six minutes and fifty seconds (2:06:50) and he went ahead to win the Chicago Marathon in a course-record time of two hours, three minutes and forty-five seconds (2:03:45).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The marathon competition is a long-distance running event with an official distance of 42.195 kilometers which is run as a road race. The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
