Islamabad, Oct 28\/Nationalturk- Pakistan\u2019s Meteorological Department has declared cyclone Nilofar as very severe.<\/p>\n
According to Pakistan Meteorological Department officials, the strength of cyclone Nilofar has intensified and is said to be equivalent to that of a hurricane.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is evident from the wind speed which, initially 90-100 Knots, is gusting up to 110 Knots,\u201d they said adding they have changed the classification of the cyclone from \u2018severe\u2019 to \u2018very severe\u2019.<\/p>\n
The officials said cyclone would move in a northwest direction today with a speed of 6km\/hour and its arrival in the adjoining coastal areas of lower Sindh and Indian Gujrat is expected on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The lower Sindh region including port city of Karachi and coastal areas of Balochistan should expect to receive widespread rain and heavy showers. Heavy rain and showers will be accompanied by strong gusty winds, between Wednesday and Friday.<\/p>\n
The Pakistan coast will experience very rough sea conditions during Wednesday and Friday.<\/p>\n
Authorities in Pakistan have advised fishermen not to venture into open seas from Wednesday onward. Those already in open sea were advised to return to coastal areas as early as possible.<\/p>\n
Officials said the cyclone Nilofar started developing in the northwest Arabian Sea five to seven days ago.<\/p>\n
They said the cyclone was likely to continue to move west-northwest direction towards the Oman coast over the next 24 to 36 hours.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will then re-curve north-eastward and is likely to hit Indian Gujarat and Rann of Kutch and southeast Sindh (Nagarparkar, Mithi, Chor, Umerkot, Chachro and Islamkot), bringing heavy rain\/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls at some places accompanied by strong gusty winds between Wednesday and Friday, \u201d they said.<\/p>\n
Cyclone \u2018Nilofar\u2019 was named by Pakistan as it was its turn in an alphabetical order. Pakistan is included in the list of Northern Indian Ocean Names and other member countries are Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Mayanmar, Oman, Sri Lanka and Thailand.<\/p>\n
Previously Oman had named Cyclone \u2018Hudhud\u2019 which slammed India\u2019s coast earlier this month.<\/p>\n
Indian officials have reviewed the precautionary relief and rescue measures in the coastal area of Indian State of Gujarat in the wake of impending cyclonic storm \u2018Nilofar\u2019 expected to make its landfall in the morning of October 31.<\/p>\n
India\u2019s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has alerted its 3 battalions situated at Vadodara (Gujarat), Pune (Maharashtra) and Bathinda (Punjab). \u201c7 rescue and relief teams are pre-positioned at Gandhidam, Dwarka, Porbandar, Veeraval, Rajkot and two teams at Bhuj in Gujarat. NDRF teams are being deployed in vulnerable areas as proactive measures to mitigate the situation during cyclonic storm,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n
Officials said boats with other flood rescue equipment are being sent to meet any challenges which may arise due to cyclonic storm \u2018Nilofar\u2019.<\/p>\n
