{"id":56298,"date":"2014-12-22T11:39:38","date_gmt":"2014-12-22T09:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=56298"},"modified":"2014-12-22T11:39:38","modified_gmt":"2014-12-22T09:39:38","slug":"south-korea-insists-nuclear-plants-secure-despite-hacking-56298","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/south-korea-insists-nuclear-plants-secure-despite-hacking-56298\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea insists nuclear plants secure despite hacking"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/south-korea-nuclear-plants.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56301\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/south-korea-nuclear-plants.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/south-korea-nuclear-plants.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/south-korea-nuclear-plants-280x170.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/south-korea-nuclear-plants-590x360.jpg 590w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a>Seoul claims threats to nuclear infrastructure based on &#8216;leaks&#8217; of classified data that could be obtained through online search.<\/h1>\n<p>As the United States investigates North Korea&#8217;s alleged role in the now infamous hacking of Sony Pictures, South Korea is dealing with its own cyber threat &#8212; but Seoul&#8217;s vice energy minister played down fears of any imminent danger Monday.<\/p>\n<p>A hacker claiming to be the president of a Hawaii-based anti -nuclear reactor group threatened via Twitter to carry out a &#8220;second wave of destruction&#8221; Sunday &#8212; having exposed floor maps and other facility information from reactors in the southeast ofSouth Korea.<\/p>\n<p>The latest of several posts since last week also warned residents near the plants in question to keep their distance over the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>But while acknowledging that leaked documents do appear to be from Gori and Wolsong nuclear power plants, Vice Energy Minister Lee Kwan-sup insisted the information was already readily available.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One cannot launch an attack with such information,&#8221; Lee said, adding that &#8220;a nuclear expert could easily obtain such information using Google&#8217;s search engine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His comments support the claim of nuclear officials, who insist that any leaks could not have occurred since April of last year, when local power plants&#8217; networks were isolated &#8212; classified information is not available via the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>But Lee did reveal that prosecutors are investigating as the government does not know &#8220;what the true intentions of these people are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Protests against the construction of new reactors, as well as the handling of old reactors and nuclear waste, have been a common feature in South Korean society in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Seoul is not able to reprocess nuclear waste under an existing agreement with the U.S. &#8212; while the country relies on its existing 23 reactors for around 30 percent of its energy needs.<\/p>\n<p>The government has also been attempting to step up its cyber defences after accusing North Korea of a massive hacking attack last year, which temporarily crippled banks and media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>As with the recent infiltration of Sony Pictures, Pyongyang maintains its innocence.<\/p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #f00;\">Error, group does not exist!
