{"id":58707,"date":"2017-04-10T10:12:06","date_gmt":"2017-04-10T09:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=58707"},"modified":"2017-04-10T10:12:39","modified_gmt":"2017-04-10T09:12:39","slug":"putin-must-end-support-for-assad-regime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/putin-must-end-support-for-assad-regime\/","title":{"rendered":"Putin Must End Support For Assad Regime"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>By proxy Russia is responsible for every civilian death in Syria last week, argues UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon<\/h2>\n<p>Russia is responsible for the latest deaths in Syria and it must act to help the United Nations to dismantle Bashar al-Assad\u2019s chemical arsenal, British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon has said.<\/p>\n<p>In a guest op-ed published in The Sunday Times, Fallon said Russia must \u201cshow the resolve necessary to bring this regime to heel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The column, entitled \u201cPuppeteer Putin must abandon Assad and join us in building peace,\u201d urged Russia to end its support for the regime and support a new political agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy proxy Russia is responsible for every civilian death last week,\u201d he wrote, openly criticizing Russia\u2019s support to the Assad regime.<\/p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #f00;\">Error, group does not exist! Check your syntax! (ID: 9)<\/span>\n<p>\u201cThis latest war crime happened on their watch. In the past few years, they have had every opportunity to pull levers and stop the civil war,\u201d he said, referring to a regime chemical weapons attack Tuesday in the town of Khan Shaykhun that killed 100 people, and injured hundreds more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Russia wants to be absolved of responsibility for future attacks, [President] Vladimir Putin needs to enforce commitments, to dismantle Assad\u2019s chemical weapons arsenal for good, and to get fully engaged with the UN peacekeeping progress,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Russians have influence in the region&#8230;They helped broker the original deal to put chemical weapons out of commission,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Fallon\u2019s remarks followed Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson\u2019s decision to cancel a planned Moscow visit.<\/p>\n<h3>US missile strikes<\/h3>\n<p>Fallon also reiterated Britain\u2019s support for the U.S. missile strikes in Syria Friday on a Syrian airfield in response to the chemical weapons attack.<\/p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #f00;\">Error, group does not exist! (ID: 8)<\/span>\n<p>The U.S. \u201cmade the right call by resorting to careful and narrowly focused military action,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Americans believed there were no peaceful means of stopping Assad using gas against his population. Given repeated Russian blocking in the UN Security Council, the U.S. was determined to act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy sending Tomahawk missiles to attack the airfield, aeroplanes, and equipment believed to be involved, it has sent a strong signal to the Syrian regime to think twice before using gas in future\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4>Assad must go<\/h4>\n<p>Fallon also repeated his country\u2019s stance against a Syrian future involving current regime leader Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone who uses barrel bombs and chemicals to kill his own people simply cannot be the future leader of Syria. Assad must go and the search for stability begin,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson has previously said Assad cannot remain in the office.<\/p>\n<p>Fallon added that an urgent agreement on a new political settlement must come in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis terrible war has gone on for six long years. Hundreds of thousands have been killed and millions displaced. Syria remains the world\u2019s worst humanitarian crisis.
