{"id":62656,"date":"2019-03-30T10:40:03","date_gmt":"2019-03-30T10:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=62656"},"modified":"2019-03-30T19:58:28","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T19:58:28","slug":"turkey-welcomes-romanias-position-on-its-eu-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/turkey-welcomes-romanias-position-on-its-eu-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey welcomes Romania\u2019s position on its EU ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Turkey\u2019s vice president hailed Romania on Friday for supporting Ankara\u2019s efforts to establish \u201cconstructive\u201d relations with the European Union.<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe welcome Romania\u2019s principled stance and its efforts, which contribute toward a constructive understanding in EU-Turkey relations,&#8221; said Fuat Oktay, speaking at a joint press conference in Bucharest with Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope Romania\u2019s stance will set an example for other European countries,&#8221; Oktay added.<\/p>\n<p>His remarks came after bilateral and inter-delegation meetings with Dancila.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had a fruitful meeting with Prime Minister Dancila\u2026We broadly exchanged views on bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin the framework of the EU presidency of Romania, we\u2019ve shared our approach and expectations to advance the negotiation process of our country&#8217;s accession to the EU,\u201d Oktay said, calling Romania a \u201cclose ally\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Romania holds the EU\u2019s rotating presidency until June 30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring our meeting, we confirmed that we are on the same page on further developing our cooperation in every field and on Turkey-EU relations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey applied for EU membership in 1987 and accession talks began in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>But negotiations stalled in 2007 due to the objections of the Greek Cypriot administration on the divided island of Cyprus as well as opposition from Germany and France.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), the group behind the 2016 coup attempt, Oktay said: \u201cWe place great importance on the continuation of mutual cooperation in the fight against the structuring of this terror organization, which also poses a threat to Romania\u2019s security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which left 251 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.<\/p>\n<p>Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>Dancila voiced her support for Turkey\u2019s EU membership, calling Turkey a \u201ckey partner\u201d of the EU.<\/p>\n<p>She also praised Turkey\u2019s efforts to deter irregular migration by hosting over 3.5 million migrants.<\/p>\n<p>Stating that Turkey and Romania have very \u201cstrong\u201d relations, Dancila said the bilateral trade potential of the two countries was very high.<\/p>\n<p>Following the press conference, Oktay met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on the sidelines of the quadrilateral meeting of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting, which was closed to the press, lasted for 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<!-- Error, Advert is not available at this time due to schedule\/geolocation restrictions!
