In many places there\u2019s 90cm of snow \u2013 for example today in Sodankyl\u00e4 there\u2019s 89cm and in Kittil\u00e4 88cm have been recorded, around 30cm more than usual.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a record for the time of year\u201d says Meteorologist Anniina Valtonen at the Finnish Meteorological Institute.<\/p>\n
\u201cTypically in January Lapland really does not have snow cover above 80cm. Such snowfall occurs once every thirty years\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n
The deeper-than-usual accumulation is because the first snows came early in autumn 2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reason why there\u2019s currently so much snow, is that the snowfall started already in October and never melted away\u201d says Valtonen<\/p>\n
\u201cThe first snowfall comes generally in October, but usually it melts away at that time. Enduring snowfall doesn\u2019t however come usually until November or December\u201d she tells News Now Finland.<\/p>\n\n
