US President Donald Trump proposed unusual methods for treating the novel coronavirus at a White House briefing Thursday, including ultraviolet light and injecting disinfectants.<\/p>\n
“So supposing we hit the body with a tremendous \u2014 whether it\u2019s ultraviolet or very powerful light. And I think you said that hasn\u2019t been checked, but you\u2019re going test it. Supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way.<\/p>\n
“Sounds interesting,” Trump told reporters.<\/p>\n
His remarks came minutes after William Bryan, acting head of the US Department of Homeland Security\u2019s Science and Technology Directorate, said solar light appears to kill the virus both on surfaces and in the air.<\/p>\n
“We\u2019ve seen a similar effect with temperature and humidity as well, where increasing the temperature and humidity — or both — is generally less favorable to the virus,” said Bryan.<\/p>\n
Later, Trump came up with another treatment, this time suggesting the use of disinfectants.<\/p>\n
“And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning? As you see, it gets in the lungs, and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that. You\u2019re going to have to use medical doctors with that, but it sounds interesting to me.<\/p>\n
“And so we\u2019ll see. But the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute, that\u2019s pretty powerful,” he added.<\/p>\n
Trump asked the doctor leading the White House’s coronavirus response team, Deborah Birx, whether she had heard of using solar light in treating the disease.<\/p>\n
“Not as a treatment. I\u2019ve not seen heat or light,” she replied.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease don\u2019t inject or consume disinfectants,\u201d tweeted Chris Hayes, the host of a news and opinion show on American cable television channel MSNBC.<\/p>\n
As of Thursday evening, the US had more than 867,000 cases and over 49,000 deaths. Nearly 80,000 have recovered.<\/p>\n
The virus has spread to 185 countries and regions, infecting over 2.7 million and killing more than 190,000 since emerging in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
