{"id":65743,"date":"2020-05-11T11:13:23","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T10:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=65743"},"modified":"2020-05-11T11:13:23","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T10:13:23","slug":"llama-antibodies-may-help-coronavirus-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/llama-antibodies-may-help-coronavirus-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"Llama antibodies may help coronavirus treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Llama antibodies may be suited to fight COVID-19, according to a new study published in the journal Cell last week.<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers from Ghent\u2019s VIB-UGent biotechnology centre and from the University of Texas at Austin announced that antibodies from a 4-year old llama, named Winter, have neutralized coronavirus in lab experiments.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is one of the first antibodies known to neutralize SARS-CoV-2,&#8221; Jason McLellan, from the University of Texas at Austin and co-author of the study, said in a written a statement.<\/p>\n<p>He said vaccines have to be given a month or two before infection to provide protection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut with antibody therapies, you\u2019re directly giving somebody the protective antibodies and so, immediately after treatment, they should be protected,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, scientists have used Winter\u2019s antibodies for earlier coronaviruses, SARS and MERS.<\/p>\n<p>The research project has conducted various tests on 130 llamas and alpacas in a farm in Belgium by a team from the University of Texas at Austin, the National Institutes of Health, and Ghent University in Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical trials have yet to start as the experiments are ongoing, according to the journal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Llama antibodies may be suited to fight COVID-19, according to a new study published in the journal Cell last week.
