The left-wing ERC party of regional president Pere Aragon\u00e8s, which is willing to negotiate with Madrid, and the Junts party, which is banking on a break with Madrid, are facing each other.<\/p>\n<h3>Illegal referendum 2017<\/h3>\n<p>On October 1, five years ago, the separatist regional government held an illegal referendum on secession from Spain. Other separatists were sentenced to long prison terms but pardoned in 2021. The Diada is celebrated every year on September 11th and commemorates the loss of Catalan autonomy in 1714.<\/p>\n<h3>The Diada brings together 150,000 protesters, one of the lowest figures since 2012<\/h3>\n<p>The demonstration, which no member of the ERC leadership has attended, is one of the least crowded since the &#8216;proc\u00e9s&#8217; began.<\/p>\n<p>Some 150,000 people, according to the Gu\u00e0rdia Urbana, have attended this afternoon the demonstration called by the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) on the occasion of the Diada, the lowest figure in the last decade, with the exception of the two years of pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstration, which no member of the ERC leadership has attended and whose motto this year is &#8220;Tornem-hi per v\u00e8ncer.
