{"id":7678,"date":"2010-07-12T13:57:47","date_gmt":"2010-07-12T10:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=7678"},"modified":"2010-07-12T14:24:32","modified_gmt":"2010-07-12T11:24:32","slug":"1-1-million-march-in-barcelona-for-catalonians-for-autonomy-from-spain-35635568","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/1-1-million-march-in-barcelona-for-catalonians-for-autonomy-from-spain-35635568\/","title":{"rendered":"1.1 million march in Barcelona for Catalonians for autonomy from Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"font-size: 1.5em;\">Over one million people were reported to have marched in Barcelona on Saturday to protest against a recent Spanish court ruling which forbid the region of calling itself a nation and for greater autonomy for Catalonia.<\/h1>\n<h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7679\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7679\" title=\"catalan March Barcelona\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/catalan-March-Barcelona.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/catalan-March-Barcelona.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/catalan-March-Barcelona-280x180.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1.1 million people were on the streets of Barcelona on Saturday protesting Span&#39;s highest courts ans shouting &quot;We are a Nation&quot; - Photo by : AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The statute that was approved at a referendum in 2006 and if granted, it would have given the Catalans who see themselves as a separate nation to Spain, a wide range of autonomy with separate language, parliament, government, judicial and educational system from Spain.<\/h2>\n<p>However, the conservative opposition Popular Party (PP), appealed to the Spanish courts as they saw the statute as a threat to Spanish unity immediately after it was approved in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish courts had recently granted the powers which would give Catalans greater autonomy in the region, but the country\u2019s highest court on Friday upheld many of PP\u2019s contentions that major parts of the statute had been unconditional.<\/p>\n<p>Police at the region announced that over 1.1 million people had taken part in the huge march on Saturday which was planned months ago, but Omnium Cultural, which organized the march had calculated the attendance to be in the 1.5 million region.<\/p>\n<p>A huge Catalonian flag was opened in Barcelona&#8217;s Diagonal, Gran Via and Paseo de Gracia boulevards with support by virtually all political party\u2019s except for the PP. A huge banner writing \u201cWe are a nation.
