The auction house did not identify the buyer of the sweater.<\/p>\n<p>A knitted sweater found in the attic of a house last March became the highest-earning Princess Diana item sold in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Diana&#8217;s Ford Escort brand car was also sold for 806 thousand dollars last year.<\/p>\n<p>It was often said that the design of the sweater showed Princess Diana&#8217;s position in the Royal Family.<\/p>\n<p>But fashion historians believe Diana wasn&#8217;t sending a message with the sweater she wore in 1981, a month before her marriage to King Charles.<\/p>\n<p>When Diana wore the sweater, the company that produced it, Warm and Wonderful, became famous.<\/p>\n<p>Buckingham Palace wrote a letter to the company immediately after the marriage, stating that the sweater was damaged and asking for a new one. The auction was active from August 31 to September 14.<\/p>\n<p>The auction house extended the sale for a few minutes due to the avalanche of bids that reached the edge of closing and that made the price go from $190,000 in 15 minutes to the $1,100,000 at which it was awarded.<\/p>\n<p>The Sheep Sweater opened Sotheby&#8217;s Fashion Icons auction in New York, which featured &#8220;a highly curated selection&#8221; of pieces from the &#8220;most influential&#8221; people, designers and cultural moments in history.<\/p>\n<h3>The story of Lady Di&#8217;s sheep sweater<\/h3>\n<p>Weeks after Diana was photographed wearing the sweater, the designers received a letter from Buckingham Palace explaining that the garment had suffered some damage to one sleeve and asking if it could be repaired or even replaced.<\/p>\n<p>The designers sent her a new garment, which earned them a letter of thanks from the princess&#8217;s private secretary, Oliver Everett.<\/p>\n<p>Both letters were part of the sale of the sweater.<\/p>\n<p>The designers of the original model assumed that the original had been repaired and sent to a customer.
