The Bornavirus causes serious symptoms in infected animals. Affected hedgehogs show severe restrictions in movement, loss of appetite and muscle twitching.

The field shrew (Crocidura leucodon) has been identified as the main carrier of the virus. This small mammal species plays a crucial role in the spread of the pathogen.

Interestingly, studies have shown that in the past, cat owners have been particularly affected by infections. This may be explained by the fact that cats, as hunters, often bring mice, including potentially infected field shrews, into the home.

This connection between cats, their prey and human infections underscores the complex nature of virus transmission and highlights the need for increased caution when dealing with wild animals, especially for pet owners in affected areas.

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for infected animals. Although transmission to humans is extremely rare, there is a certain risk. The Robert Koch Institute estimates that around five to ten acute cases occur in humans in Germany each year.

Protective measures against the Borna virus and other pathogens

Avoid contact: Never touch dead shrews or other small animals with your bare hands.
Use protective equipment:
Wear rubber gloves
In dusty environments: Use a tight-fitting mask and safety glasses
Disposal:
Wrap the dead animal in a well-sealed plastic bag
Dispose of it in the household waste
Hygiene after contact:
Shower immediately
Wash your hair thoroughly
Clean any clothing worn

Since July 2024, four hedgehogs have contracted the virus and died in a hedgehog station in Eggenfelden.
