Both Director General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness announced their departures amid mounting internal and external pressure. The scandal erupted after the Daily Telegraph published leaked internal correspondence written by former BBC editorial adviser Michael Prescott. The memo alleged that the Panorama episode Trump: A Second Chance? spliced together separate parts of Trump\u2019s January 6, 2021, speech to make it appear as if he had directly urged supporters to attack the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n

In reality, Trump\u2019s \u201cWe\u2019re going to walk down to the Capitol\u201d line and his \u201cWe fight like hell\u201d remark were spoken more than 50 minutes apart. The edit, according to Prescott, created a \u201cfalse impression of incitement\u201d that breached editorial standards.<\/p>\n

Resignations and accountability<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In a statement published on the BBC\u2019s website, Tim Davie described his resignation as \u201centirely my decision,\u201d adding:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe BBC is not a perfect institution. We must always be open, transparent, and accountable. The recent debate around BBC News has understandably contributed to my decision, and as director general, I must take ultimate responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Deborah Turness told staff in an internal email:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe controversy surrounding the Panorama program has reached a point where it risks damaging the BBC \u2014 an institution I love. As CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs, the buck stops with me, and I have decided to step down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump lashes out<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Reacting on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump celebrated the resignations, writing:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe top people at the BBC, including Tim Davie, are all quitting because they were caught doctoring my perfect speech. These are very dishonest people who tried to interfere in a presidential election.\u201d<\/p>\n

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt went further, calling the BBC \u201c100% fake news\u201d and a \u201cpropaganda machine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Accusations of bias beyond Trump<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The BBC has also faced criticism over its coverage of the Israel-Gaza conflict, with claims that the network downplayed Palestinian casualties and avoided using the term \u201cgenocide.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 100 BBC journalists reportedly sent an internal letter accusing the corporation of \u201cfailing to reflect Palestinian voices\u201d and using \u201cbiased, pro-Israeli language\u201d in its reporting.<\/p>\n

UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy described the allegations as \u201cincredibly serious\u201d and demanded a full explanation from the BBC Board.<\/p>\n

The resignations come just as the government prepares to review the BBC\u2019s Royal Charter, which defines the corporation\u2019s mandate and funding, before its renewal in 2027.<\/p>\n

The BBC\u2019s board is now expected to appoint an interim leadership team and launch a comprehensive investigation into the Panorama documentary.
