As authorities targeted one of Brazil<\/a>\u2019s most powerful criminal organisations, the Red Command, the operation quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation. With civilians caught in the middle and retaliation unfolding on the streets, the incident has reignited debate over the country\u2019s security policies.<\/p>\n

Gang leader killed in operation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Authorities confirmed that Claudio Augusto dos Santos, a senior figure in the Red Command, was killed during the raid. Six other suspects also died, while a local resident was reportedly caught in the crossfire after being taken hostage.<\/p>\n

Police described the operation as a \u201cmajor armed confrontation\u201d.<\/p>\n

Panic in the streets: Bus set on fire<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Following the raid, suspected gang members retaliated by blocking roads and setting a bus on fire, according to local reports.<\/p>\n

Bus driver Marcio Souza described the moment:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey got on, told me to get the passengers off, and set the bus on fire. It all happened very fast\u201d<\/p>\n

150 officers deployed, arrests made<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Around 150 military police officers took part in the operation across several areas, including Prazeres, Fallet, Fogueteiro, Coroa, Escondidinho and Paula Ramos. Authorities also arrested five individuals on suspicion of vandalism.<\/p>\n

Dos Santos was reportedly linked to drug trafficking activities and had multiple outstanding arrest warrants.<\/p>\n

Criticism grows<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The operation has sparked renewed criticism over police tactics in Brazil, especially following previous deadly raids in Rio\u2019s favelas.<\/p>\n

Rio de Janeiro state deputy Renata da Silva Souza reacted to the incident, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother day of panic and fear in Rio de Janeiro\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that civilians were once again caught in the crossfire and announced that she had filed a complaint with prosecutors.<\/p>\n

Political divide deepens<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Debate over security policies continues to divide opinion in Brazil. While some politicians are calling for tougher action against criminal groups, others argue that such operations are poorly planned and put civilians at risk.<\/p>\n

Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro defended the police, stating:<\/p>\n
