Iran’s announcement that it has shut the strategic waterway again because the US naval blockade remains in place has created fresh uncertainty across international supply chains. As one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors, the strait’s closure is continuing to affect not only energy markets but also aviation, agriculture and industrial production.

The strait had been temporarily reopened during the ceasefire

Iran had previously announced that it was reopening the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels for the duration of the 10-day temporary ceasefire declared between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. That step had briefly raised hopes that pressure on energy markets could ease.

However, Tehran later said the strait had been closed again because the US blockade targeting Iranian ports was still in effect. US President Donald Trump was also reported to have said that the blockade would remain in force.

Oil and gas prices climbed

The impact of the closure was felt quickly in energy markets. Oil prices rose above 100 dollars a barrel, while gas prices increased by more than 12 percent.

The price surge was not limited to energy bills alone. It also began to affect supply chains tied to jet fuel, fertiliser shipments and several industrial inputs.

Jet fuel shortage risk is growing

The highest level of risk is said to be in Asia, and to a lesser extent in Europe. Europe is estimated to receive around 75 percent of its jet fuel supplies from the Middle East, making tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz especially important.

There are differing views on when falling fuel supplies could begin to force flight cancellations. Some industry figures have warned that Europe could face a more serious situation in the coming weeks. The European Commission, however, said there is currently no evidence of a fuel shortage within the European Union.

Airports Council International Europe also warned that jet fuel shortages could begin in May if tankers do not resume transit through the strait. International Energy Agency chief Fatih Birol likewise said shortages in Europe could begin around early May.

Fertiliser shipments and food production are also under pressure

The closure of the strait is also affecting fertiliser transport. African countries are considered especially exposed because of their dependence on imported fertiliser.

According to the Canadian press agency Agence Science-Presse, a significant share of key fertiliser components such as urea, ammonia and diammonium phosphate moves through the Strait of Hormuz. Disruption in those shipments could push prices higher and force farmers to reduce fertiliser use.

That, in turn, could lower cereal production and prompt some countries to restrict exports in order to protect domestic supply.

Warnings over food insecurity

World Bank chief economist Indermit Gill warned that the broader ripple effects could push millions more people toward hunger. He said that around 300 million people already face acute food insecurity and that the figure could rise by about 20 percent very quickly.

Gill also said the economic fallout is currently felt most sharply in Asia, but if the crisis continues it is likely to spread rapidly to Africa. In Latin America, higher fertiliser costs and supply pressure are also expected to weigh on agricultural incomes.

Production pressure has begun in some countries

The disruption is affecting not only fertiliser trade from Gulf countries but also fertiliser manufacturing elsewhere, as higher oil prices raise costs across the sector. Partial closures and production cuts have already been reported at fertiliser plants in India, Malaysia and Bangladesh.

The full effect on food prices is not expected to be immediate, but it may become more visible over the coming months.

UK prepares for possible CO2 shortage

The crisis is also reaching beyond energy and farming. In the United Kingdom, contingency planning has reportedly begun over the possibility of reduced carbon dioxide supplies.

CO2, a by-product of fertiliser production from natural gas, is used in pig and chicken slaughter, in fresh meat and produce packaging, and in the refrigeration of blood supplies, organs and vaccines. British contingency plans are said to include prioritising CO2 supplies for the civilian nuclear sector and healthcare services.

US blockade remains at the centre of the tension

Iran’s military command said the renewed closure of the Strait of Hormuz was directly linked to the continued US naval blockade.

The US blockade remains one of the main sources of tension in the region, while the latest development in Hormuz has again placed global supply chains under close watch.

The disruption in global energy and shipping routes linked to the war in the Middle East has deepened once more through the Strait of Hormuz.
