So far, 1,645 cases have been confirmed nationwide, while more than 5,000 suspected cases are still under review.

Cases reported in 34 states

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said infections have been reported in at least 34 states.

According to CDC data, nearly 7,000 people across the country may have contracted cyclosporiasis from contaminated food.

Since May, 141 people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported so far.

Source still unknown

Health officials have not yet identified a specific food item, restaurant, market or distributor as the source of the outbreak.

The US Food and Drug Administration has also launched an investigation into the surge in cases.

Some state investigations suggest that fresh produce may be linked to the infections. In previous outbreaks, items such as lettuce, raspberries, basil, cilantro and peas were among the products associated with cyclosporiasis.

It does not spread from person to person

Experts say cyclosporiasis does not spread through casual contact from one person to another.

The illness is caused by a microscopic parasite called Cyclospora, which can contaminate food or water. Raw fruits and vegetables are considered among the higher-risk foods when not washed or handled properly.

Symptoms can last for weeks

The most common symptom of cyclosporiasis is prolonged watery diarrhea.

Other symptoms may include loss of appetite, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, bloating, low-grade fever and extreme fatigue.

Doctors advise people to seek medical care if diarrhea does not improve within a few days. The CDC has also urged healthcare providers to specifically request Cyclospora testing in suspected cases.

Warning over fresh fruits and vegetables

Health officials are advising the public to wash fresh produce thoroughly under clean running water until the source of the outbreak is identified.

Fruits and vegetables should not be rinsed in standing water. Experts also recommend washing hands before and after food preparation, cleaning kitchen surfaces and cooking produce when possible to reduce the risk of infection.

Health authorities in the US have issued an alert over cyclosporiasis, an illness that can cause severe diarrhea, nausea and fatigue.
