{"id":8920,"date":"2010-10-22T13:58:20","date_gmt":"2010-10-22T10:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=8920"},"modified":"2011-01-13T18:41:03","modified_gmt":"2011-01-13T16:41:03","slug":"11-5-m-compensation-for-wrongful-imprisonment-of-us-man-3673335","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/11-5-m-compensation-for-wrongful-imprisonment-of-us-man-3673335\/","title":{"rendered":"$18.5 M compensation for wrongful imprisonment of US man"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"font-size: 1.5em; text-align: justify;\">A US man who spent 22 years in prison for a crime he did not commit has been awarded \u00a311.5 million ($18.5 million) by a federal jury after he was released in 2006 after DNA evidence proved that he did not commit the crime.<\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8921\" title=\"newton released\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/newton-released-280x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/newton-released-280x175.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/newton-released.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/>Alan Newton was convicted and received a life sentence in 1984 for the rape and assault of a woman at a convenience store in the Bronx area of New York City.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 49-year-old African-American had started a petition in 1994 to have a DNA test to prove his innocents, but it took 11-years for the test to finally be done.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Newton was released in 2006 but the court case for compensation lasted for several years with the 49-year-old \u201cvindicated\u201d by the Manhattan jury\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Had Newton\u2019s innocence not have been proved he would have been let out in 2024 a further 18-years later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A non-profit organization which looks at suspicious cases in several countries around the world including Canada and the United States, The Innocence Project had taken on Newton\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An Innocence Project is\u00a0dedicated to proving the innocence of wrongly convicted people through the use of DNA Testing, and to the reform of criminal justice systems to prevent future injustice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Newton has been reported to be interested in going to law school but will go on a holiday before that &#8220;to a hot place&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Write your comments and thoughts below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #f00;\">Error, group does not exist!
