{"id":9337,"date":"2010-12-07T15:17:59","date_gmt":"2010-12-07T12:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/?p=9337"},"modified":"2010-12-07T15:50:49","modified_gmt":"2010-12-07T12:50:49","slug":"cantona-cash-withdrawal-protest-irks-eu-finance-leaders-7122010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/cantona-cash-withdrawal-protest-irks-eu-finance-leaders-7122010\/","title":{"rendered":"Cantona cash withdrawal protest irks EU finance leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9338\" title=\"eric-cantona\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/eric-cantona-280x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/eric-cantona-280x194.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.nationalturk.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/eric-cantona.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><strong>A call by French ex-footballer Eric Cantona for people to punish banks by withdrawing all their cash has been condemned by EU ministers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cantona went online to call for customers to empty their accounts on Tuesday in a &#8220;revolution&#8221; against a &#8220;corrupt, criminal&#8221; banking system.<\/p>\n<p>He is said to have at least 38,000 supporters in France and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the Eurogroup of finance ministers, said the idea was &#8220;totally irresponsible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Cantona, an icon from his days at Manchester United, said in a video posted online: &#8220;The three million people in the street, they go to the bank, withdraw their money, and the banks collapse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a real threat, there&#8217;s a real revolution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His appeal has spread through Facebook and YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Juncker, prime minister of Luxembourg, said in response: &#8220;I have various feelings towards the financial sector but I find the operation you are referring to totally irresponsible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joining the condemnation, French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde remarked that citizens &#8220;do not have the savings he has&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Olli Rehn, the EU&#8217;s powerful economic affairs commissioner and himself a former director of a Finnish first division club, said he considered himself a Man United fan.<\/p>\n<p>But he added: &#8220;I think Mr Cantona is a better footballer than he is an economist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #f00;\">Error, group does not exist!
