At least one man was shot dead by police outside Parliament Square Wednesday afternoon after stabbing a police officer, said Commons Leader David Lidington.
Metropolitan police say they are treating the incident as a terrorist incident until they know otherwise.
Parliament is under a complete security lockdown with all entrances and exits suspended.
Following the incident, armed police officers went inside the parliament building.
Lidington said shortly after the incident that a police officer was stabbed and the assailant was shot by the police.
Media reports also say that shortly beforehand, at least four people were mowed down on nearby Westminster Bridge and injured.
Scotland Yard said it was called to a firearms incident on Westminster Bridge amid reports of several people injured.
