1.15 million killed in road accidents in India in 10 yrs

At least 1.15 million people were killed in road accidents in Indian in a decade.

New Delhi, Feb 24/Nationalturk – The road accidents are on rise in India and at least 1.15 million people were killed in mishaps in the country in last 10 years.

“A total number of 11,54,553 people were killed in road accidents in India from 2003-2012,” Indian Minister of State in Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Tushar A Chaudhary informed upper house of Indian parliament, Rajya Sabha.

He said 49,61,970 people were injured in the road accidents in country in last decade.

India has formulated National Road safety policy

Tushar said Indian government has formulated a National Road Safety Policy, which outlines various policy measures such as promoting awareness, establishing road safety information data base, encouraging safer road infrastructure including application of intelligent transport, enforcement of safety laws, emergency medical services for road accidents.

“It is ensured that road safety is the integral part of road design at planning stage. Various steps to enhance road safety such as road furniture, road markings/road signs, introduction of Highway Traffic Management System using Intelligent Transport System, enhancement of discipline among contractors during construction, road safety audit on selected stretches, have been undertaken by National Highways Authority of India,” he said.

He further said authorities have tightened safety standards of vehicles like seat belts, power-steering, rear view mirror etc to minimize accidents. “The traffic laws are being also strictly enforced by the traffic police men and officials”.
