21 killed in fierce gun battle between two Mexican drug cartel gangs in Sonora

Police officials has said that fierce gun battle between two powerful rival drug gangs in Mexico has ended with at least 21 people dead on Thursday.

The gun battle took place 12 miles south of the border, Sonora State between to drug cartels associated with human trafficking and drug smuggling.

Mexican authorities have said that the battle between the rival gangs took place in a deserted area and is thought to have been pre-planned, but has not yet been confirmed.

Mexican police officials have said that eight bullet riddled vehicles were recovered from the area where the gun battle took place with seven weapons also retrieved.

Mexican media have also said that the area where the two gangs clashed were full of empty bullet cases.

Nine people were arrested, all suspected to being members of the gangs, with three of the arrested with gunshot or knife wounds.

The injured are being treated in a hospital ate the state capital of Hermosillo.

Over 23,000 people have been killed in Mexico since Felipe Calderon declared a crackdown on drug related violence.

The latest incident in Mexico game in the week where Gubernatorial elections will take place and a few days after a top politician Rodolfo Torre Cantu was assassinated by members of a drug cartel.
