A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a Shia moque in Hangu town of Pakistan, killing 22 persons and injuring 40 others.

Islamabad, Feb 1/Nationalturk – At least 22 persons were killed and more than 40 injured in a suicide bombing outside a Shia Muslim mosque in Hangu town of Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday.

Police said a suicide bomber detonated the explosive vest as Shia Muslim worshippers were coming out of a mosque after offering Friday congregation prayers in the crowded Pat Bazaar area of Hangu town.

A police officer, who was on the spot, said 22 persons were killed in the suicide blast. “Most of the victims were worshippers, who were coming out of the mosque,” he said.

Target of bombing were Shia Muslims

Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper quoted District Police officer (DPO) Dr Muhammed Saeed as saying that it was a suicide bombing. “The suicide attacker targeted Shia Muslims but Sunni Muslims also were victims as their mosque are very close to the site,” he said.

He said police have found head of the bomber, who had come on a motorbike.

A police officer said immediately after the bombing, police cordoned off the whole area. “The policemen were collecting forensic samples from the site. Further investigations are going on,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dawn quoted a local health official Dr Nawab Hussain as saying that more than 40 injured to district hospital. “Of them 16 were critically injured and they were shifted to other hospitals for specialized treatment”.

He said 22 bodies had been brought to the hospital.

Hangu town in restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has been racked by sectarian violence.

Although no militant group has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing, police believe that the attack must have been carried out by banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The militant group has claimed responsibility of such attacks in the past.
