Militants in Indian  Kashmir attacked search party of Indian army men on Friday, killing four soldiers. A militant was also reportedly killed in the firefight.

Srinagar, May 24/Nationalturk – At least four Indian army men were killed in a militant attack in Indian administered Kashmir on Friday.  A militant was also reportedly killed in the firefight.

A senior army officer said a group of militants fired from automatic weapons on a search party of Indian army at Harde Buchoo village Tral, 30 kilometres southeast of Srinagar, summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, this morning.

“The fire was returned by the soldiers, triggering an encounter. In the ensuing gunfight, which continued for more than four hours, three soldiers were killed and another critically injured,” he said.

The officer said a local militant of Hizbul Mujahideen  was reportedly killed in the gunfight. “However, we have not recovered his body so far”.

He said the injured soldier succumbed to injuries in the hospital. With his death, the death toll of soldiers killed in the firefight has risen to four.

Sources said militants managed to escape from the area after the firefight.  “A massive manhunt has been launched to track them down,” they said.

Combing and search operation going on

An Indian army spokesman in Srinagar Lt Col Ankur Vashist has confirmed the militant attack and admitted that three soldiers were killed and another critically injured.

He said combing and search operation in the area is going on. “We have got reports that one local militant was killed in the firefight with soldiers. But we have not recovered his body yet”.

No militant group has claimed responsibility of the attack, which came a day after top Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Hilal Molvi was killed. He was a Kashmiri militant and active from last 4-5 years.  His killing was termed as a major jolt for Lashkar in Kashmir by Indian security agencies.

The region has seen an armed militancy against Indian rule since 1989. However, the violence has dropped considerably in recent years.
