What is happening in Mexico? Chaos after El Mencho operation

Violence erupted across multiple Mexican states after the army killed CJNG leader “El Mencho.” Roadblocks, arson attacks and security alerts followed the high-profile operation, while Turkey’s Embassy in Mexico issued a warning to its citizens.

Mexico has been shaken by a wave of unrest following the killing of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The military operation in Jalisco triggered immediate retaliation, with burning vehicles, blocked highways and widespread panic reported in several regions.

Operation in Tapalpa

Mexican armed forces carried out the operation in Tapalpa, in the state of Jalisco. Authorities confirmed that El Mencho was wounded during the confrontation and later died. Weapons and armored vehicles were seized, and several suspects were detained.

CJNG is considered one of Mexico’s most powerful and aggressive criminal organizations, heavily involved in trafficking fentanyl and other narcotics into the United States.

Retaliation spreads nationwide

In the hours following the operation, cartel members reportedly set vehicles on fire and blocked major roads in multiple states. Public transportation was suspended in parts of Jalisco, and schools were canceled in some areas.

In Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, residents sheltered indoors as smoke from burning vehicles filled the skies. Security forces were deployed across affected regions.

U.S. intelligence support confirmed

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the United States provided intelligence assistance to Mexico during the operation. She emphasized that El Mencho had been a “top-level target” due to his role in fentanyl trafficking.

The Trump administration previously designated CJNG as a foreign terrorist organization.

Government urges calm

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for calm, stating that daily life continues in much of the country. She praised the armed forces and said federal and state authorities are working in full coordination.

Turkey warns its citizens

Turkey’s Embassy in Mexico announced that it is closely monitoring developments in Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Tamaulipas, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. Turkish nationals were urged to remain vigilant, follow local authorities’ instructions and use the emergency hotline +525579177785 if necessary.

A turning point in cartel conflict?

The death of El Mencho marks one of the most significant blows against organized crime in recent years. However, analysts warn that the power vacuum could trigger further instability and internal cartel conflicts.

Security forces remain on high alert as Mexico braces for potential continued unrest.
