Berlin Airport opens nine years later than planned

In the middle of the corona crisis and nine years late, the new BER airport in Berlin will open on Saturday (2 p.m.) with the first two landings.

An Easyjet machine from Tegel Airport and a Lufthansa flight from Munich are to touch down at the same time on the two runways of the previous Schönefeld Airport and BER. The new airport is now considered open. There will be no official celebration in view of the corona pandemic.

A second completed passenger terminal will not be unlocked at all for the time being due to the corona-related collapse in passenger numbers, but rather planned for next year. Even the multiple postponements, tripled construction costs and years of delays do not make BER the greatest party mood. Of course, top German politicians are expected. This also applies to the bosses at Lufthansa and Easyjet.

The first aircraft with passengers checked in at BER will then take off for London on Sunday morning. The government terminal at BER has been in operation since last week.
