Building collapse in China – 53 dead and 10 survivors recovered

A week after a multi-storey building complex collapsed in the Chinese city of Changsha, the rescue work has been completed. Authorities also arrested suspects.

A week after a multi-story building collapsed in China, authorities have put the final death toll at 53. The rescue workers got ten people alive from the rubble and recovered 53 bodies, the state broadcaster CCTV reported on Friday. “All” of the people trapped under the rubble were found, which ended the rescue and recovery work.

The multi-storey building complex in the city of Changsha, in which apartments, a hotel and a cinema were located, collapsed on Friday last week. Hundreds of emergency services were sent to the scene of the accident, who last saved a woman from the rubble on Thursday night.

Building was probably partly erected illegally

It is not yet known why the building collapsed. However, buildings keep collapsing in China. This is partly due to low safety standards, but also to corruption among government officials responsible for overseeing building codes.

According to the authorities, the building in Changsha was also partly illegally constructed. The police arrested the owner of the house and several people involved in the design and construction.
