Cuba Rejects EU High Representative Statements

Catherine Ashton

Cuba on Tuesday rejected recent statements about the island expressed by the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, which the foreign ministry described as misguided.

Elio Rodriguez, acting director of the European department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that those comments formulated to the correspondent in Geneva of O Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper “constitute a new interference in Cuba’s internal affairs.”

Ashton is meddling in matters that are the sole responsibility of the Cubans, Rodriguez said.

He stated that Havana does not recognize that she has any moral or political authority to criticize the island on human rights matters.

“Let’s urge the bloc to analyze the dangerous problems afflicting it, such as the crisis of the Euro, the anti-emigrant policy, violent repression against demonstrators, and the increasing social exclusion of the unemployed and low income sectors,” Rodriguez stated in the text.

Ashton said in her statements to the Brazilian daily that she is concerned about civil and political rights in the island.
