Easyjet is canceling 1,000 flights this summer

"There is a lack of staff everywhere": It could be difficult to fly on vacation in the summer.

Easyjet alone is canceling around 1,000 flights for the season. But the low-cost airline is not the only one.

From the beginning of June to the end of August, Easyjet is canceling around twelve flights a day to and from Berlin – this means that around 1,000 connections will be lost in the summer. The airline also justified this with an unusually high level of sick leave.

Easyjet is not only affected by the problems of air traffic, which is picking up again after the Corona crisis. Other airlines are also massively thinning out their flight schedules to ensure stable operations. Because there is an enormous shortage of staff, especially among ground service providers, as many employees have turned their backs on the industry during the pandemic. For July alone, Lufthansa is canceling 900 domestic and European flights at the hubs in Frankfurt and Munich in order to relieve processes at peak times such as weekends. The Lufthansa low-cost subsidiary Eurowings is also cutting several hundred connections.

The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit warned that too many employees had migrated because of poor job conditions. “Now people want to fly again and there is a lack of staff everywhere to handle planes, to refuel them, to look after the passengers or to fly the planes.”
