Floods close border crossing in Turkey’s northwest

Floods close border crossing in Turkey's northwestFloods closed a border crossing in northwestern Turkey on Monday, one day after Bulgaria announced that it would open a floodgate on a shared river to relieve flood-hit towns on its side of the border.

Officials at the Kapıkule border crossing in the northwestern province of Edirne have not allowed vehicles to cross into Bulgaria since floods closed the highway at Bulgaria’s Kapitan Andreevo border crossing.

A brook, only 150 meters away from the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing, overflowed this morning, closing the highway from Turkey’s Kapıkule to Kapitan Andreevo to traffic.

Fifty trucks are waiting at the Kapıkule border crossing at the moment.

Officials said they would allow crossings after the highway was cleared in Bulgaria.
