France pushes back against Trump’s Iran threat
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot reacted sharply to US President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting that Iranian civilization could be wiped out. Barrot said he hopes those threats will not be carried out and warned that such a move would dangerously escalate tensions across the region and the wider world.

As tensions in the Middle East continue to deepen, France has issued a pointed response to Washington’s latest rhetoric on Iran. Speaking on French channel France 2, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Iran’s people should not be confused with the government in Tehran and warned that language of this scale could trigger consequences far beyond the region. His remarks came after Donald Trump’s statement about the possible destruction of Iranian civilization sparked fresh international concern.
“A civilization cannot be erased”
Asked whether Trump’s threat toward Iran should be taken seriously, Barrot responded, “Everything that is excessive is insignificant. A civilization cannot be erased.” With those words, the French minister made clear that Paris rejects the idea of such a threat being turned into reality.
“I hope he will not act on these threats”
Barrot stressed that a large nation like Iran should not be reduced to its current leadership alone. He said, “This is not President Trump’s first ultimatum since the start of the war. Of course, I hope he will not act on these threats.” His comments underlined France’s concern over any further escalation.
Strong warning over attacks on civilian infrastructure
Barrot also warned that carrying out such a threat would sharply raise tensions in both the region and the rest of the world. He said France is firmly opposed to attacks on civilian infrastructure, no matter where they take place and regardless of who is responsible. He added that such attacks are against the laws of war and international law.
Trump’s remarks triggered new debate
Trump had said in a social media post, “Tonight, an entire civilization will be wiped out and will never come back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it will probably happen.” His statement quickly fueled new controversy, while France’s response stood out as one of the clearest reactions yet.
