A girl was detained in Indian administered Kashmir for being allegedly involved in stone pelting during 2010 unrest in the region.
Srinagar, Dec 22/Nationalturk – At a time when there has been uproar in India over gang rape of a 23-year-old female student, a girl was detained in Indian administered Kashmir for being allegedly involved in stone pelting during 2010 unrest in the region. She was later bailed-out by the court.
“Policemen visited our residence in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Thursday evening and asked us to produce Zahida and her father in the police station. They told us that they were investigating the bullet injury sustained by her in 2010,” said Adil Dar, elder brother of Zahida.
Zahida had sustained bullet injury in her leg in police firing during 2010 unrest in General Bus Stand, Anantnag in South Kashmir.
Kashmir witnessed massive unrest in 2010. Over 110 persons, mostly youth were killed in the police and paramilitary soldiers firing in the region in 2010. The protests were triggered after a youth was killed in police action in June 2010 in summer capital Srinagar.
Zahida’s family members said as directed by the policemen, they produced Zahida in Police station Sadder yesterday. “When, we produced her in police station, she was detained by the police men. We were told that she was involved in a stone pelting incident. She was lodged in the police station for the night,” they said”.
She has been rendered handicap
The family members condemned the arrest of Zahida. “She has been rendered handicap after being hit by a bullet in police firing in 2010”.
A top police official while confirming the arrest said the girl was arrested for her involvement in stone pelting during the 2010 unrest.
Meanwhile, a local court granted interim bail to her after submitting a bond of Rs 30000.
This is the first instance in Indian administered Kashmir when a girl has been arrested for being allegedly involved in stone pelting.
