Hamilton: “Not long before my stop”
The reigning world champion spoke of his possible farewell to F1, not imminent but not too distant in time
The renewal of Lewis Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes is one of the topics that are keeping F1 most excited in anticipation of the future. The reigning world champion, now one step away from the seventh world title, expires at the end of 2020 with the team that made him a legend. Several times the Englishman has reiterated his desire to extend his relationship with the Stuttgart house, but the signing has not yet arrived. Interviewed by Sky Sports about his future, Hamilton also opened the doors to the idea of retirement. Not at the end of this season, he guaranteed the English, but not in the too distant future.
“Between one thing and the other I definitely think about what there will be – explained the Stevenage champion – I’m working on projects other than this. Nothing that’s big enough for me to talk about right now, but I’m working on those other things trying to be as prepared as possible, ”added Hamilton. The Englishman, very active in the field of combating discrimination, as he has demonstrated throughout this championship, has already shown interest in the world of fashion, cinema and music in recent years.
“I don’t think I’m at the top – he underlined in reference to his Formula 1 career – I think I’m in a good area and I want to continue racing, but I don’t know for how long. It certainly won’t be long before I stop, so this is a period of time in which to slowly understand what the future holds. I can say that I intend to be here again next year, so at least for a while there is no need to worry “he then joked, thus reiterating his willingness to renew with Mercedes.
“I am winning all these races, but it really means nothing unless you do something with the platform that all this provides you – explained the English champion, in reference to his continuous battles for a more inclusive F1 – they happen for a reason and I think we are all probably looking for our purpose. I have won these races, I have been successful and I wonder: what does all this mean? What am I going to do with this? And this year came this (the fight with the Black Lives Matter movement) and I’m really proud of it. I am grateful to be part of the great battle that everyone is fighting for ”concluded Hamilton.
