Indian army Saturday said five militants were killed in a fire-fight with soldiers along Line of Control (LoC) in Indian Kashmir.
New Delhi, Aug 31/Nationalturk – Indian army Saturday said five well armed militants were killed in an encounter with soldiers along Line of Control (LoC), the defacto border between nuclear armed arch rivals India and Pakistan, in Indian Kashmir.
“Indian army men detected a group of heavily armed militants near the LoC in Tangdhar sector, some 185 kms North of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir during the preceding night,” a senior army official said pleading anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media.
He said the militants were trying to sneak into this side of LoC from Pakistani controlled Kashmir (PcK).
“The militants were signalled to stop and lay down weapons. However, the militants turned down the offer and fired from automatic weapons towards the Indian soldiers, guarding the LoC. The fire was returned by the soldiers and in the ensuing firefight, which continued for more than four hours, five militants were killed. Bodies of five militants and large cache of arms and ammunition have been recovered,” the official said.
‘Combing and search operation going on’
The official said combing and search operation in the area is going on. “The group comprised six militants and soldiers are searching for the sixth militant,” he said adding identity of the militants and the outfit to which they owe allegiance was being ascertained.
Indian army has alleged that infiltration attempts by militants from PcK have increased manifold during last couple of months. “With today’s encounter, army has killed 23 militants during counter infiltration operations along the LoC in past three months,” a senior Indian army official said.
He said the security apparatus at LoC has been further tightened and more security men armed with sophisticated gadgets have been deployed to prevent infiltration of militants into Indian Kashmir.
“The soldiers and officers at LoC have intensified foot-and-night patrolling to foil any infiltration attempt of militants,” added the official.
