India is going to set up a new air base at Nyoma near border with China in Indian Kashmir.

New Delhi, Oct 5/Nationalturk –  In order to send a strong signal to China and prevent Chinese troops from making incursions in Indian territory, India is going to set up a new air base at Nyoma near border with China in Indian Kashmir.

“The airfield at Nyoma in South Eastern Ladakh  will be expanded into a full-fledged airbase,” Indian Air Force Chief N A K Browne has said.

He said fighter planes, aircrafts and transport aircrafts can land in the new base, thus giving added power to IAF.

Nyoma is located at a height of 13,000 feet. The airfield in Nyoma was not used by India after war with China in 1962 but was reactivated in 2010.

The Nyoma airbase is 100 miles away from Daulat Beg Oldie sector at Line of Actual Control (LAC), defector border with China. Chinese troops had in April this year entered Daulat Beg Oldie sector and set up tents there. However, after negotiations between Chinese and Indian military leaders, 21-day long stand-off ended and Chinese troops retreated.

‘Nyoma airbase will be operational by 2016-17’

Browne said Nyoma airbase will be completely operational by 2016-17. “It   will be used to station fighter jets and provide logistical help to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Ladakh Scouts, which patrol the LAC with China.

He said the cost of developing the air base would be around Rs 2,173 crore (Indian currency).  “After completion of the base, all types of aircraft including fighters, helicopters and transport aircraft would be able capable of being deployed and operated from there,” he said.

Experts said after recent incursions by Chinese troops, Indian government has decided to rapidly build infrastructure along the India-China border to ensure better mobility of Indian soldiers.
