Indian Supreme Court Friday said New Delhi (country’s capital), where 23-year-old woman was gang raped in a moving bus on December 16 last year, is unsafe for women.

New Delhi, Jan 11/Nationalturk -After the recent gang rape of 23-year-old woman in a moving bus outraged India, Indian Supreme Court Friday said country’s capital (New Delhi), where the gang rape of woman had taken place on December 16 last year, is unsafe for women.

“The court is very concerned about providing a safe environment for women so they could live with dignity. There is no safety for women in Delhi (Indian capital). It is unsafe for women,” Indian supreme court’s division bench comprising Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice Dipak Misra said while hearing a public suit.

The public suit comes in the wake of the gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus December 16 and her subsequent death in a Singapore hospital where she was airlifted for specialised treatment. The incident sparked outrage across India and led to calls for stricter laws including capital punishment against rape and molestation of women.

Even after the much hue and cry over the gang rape of 23-year-old woman in a moving bus, there has been no let up against crimes and offences against women. Scores of rape and molestation cases have been reported from the Indian capital since December 16.

Delhi has earned the notoriety of rape capital of India. According to India’ National Crime Records Bureau, 24,206 rape cases were registered in India in 2011.
