The justification presented by the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump for the detention of Venezuela’s constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro, is facing increasing scrutiny as contradictions appear in official documents and international reports.
Claims linking Maduro to the so-called “Cartel of the Suns,” which formed a central pillar of the U.S. narrative, are now being questioned after multiple authoritative sources failed to corroborate their existence.
Allegations under renewed scrutiny
International observers point to long-standing accusations used by Washington to target governments it considers incompatible with its economic, geopolitical or security interests. In the case of Venezuela, these accusations were widely promoted through political statements and media coverage, framing the operation as a law enforcement action.
However, analysts note that several elements of the narrative have weakened as the case has moved forward.
Drug trafficking routes ignored
Despite well-documented global drug trafficking routes and known major producer countries, these factors were largely absent from the arguments used to justify the case against Maduro.
A report published by The New York Times highlighted that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s annual National Drug Threat Assessment has never mentioned the alleged “Cartel of the Suns.” The same omission appears in the World Drug Report issued by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Changes in U.S. legal filings
Further attention has focused on recent changes in U.S. court documents. Earlier indictments referenced the alleged cartel multiple times and portrayed Maduro as its leader. Revised filings, however, significantly reduced those references, raising questions about the strength of the original claims.
Legal observers say the revisions suggest difficulties in sustaining the initial accusations within the U.S. judicial system.
International reaction
The developments have fueled criticism both within Venezuela and internationally, where calls are growing for respect for legal standards, due process and internationally recognized norms.
