A military aviation disaster has shaken Colombia after a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft crashed during takeoff in Puerto Leguízamo, in the southern Putumayo region. Authorities confirmed that dozens of troops were on board, while rescue teams were immediately deployed to the scene. The exact cause of the crash and the number of victims remain unclear.

Crash during takeoff

Colombia’s Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed that the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff.

“Military units are already at the scene. However, the number of victims and the causes of the accident have not yet been precisely determined,” he said.

Around 110 troops reportedly on board

Local reports indicated that approximately 110 soldiers were on the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules aircraft, while officials confirmed that “dozens” of troops were being transported.

Rescue operations underway

Emergency and military teams have launched search and rescue efforts at the crash site. Initial reports suggest that some personnel may have been rescued alive, though no official casualty figures have been released.

President Petro reacts

Colombian President Gustavo Petro described the crash as something that “should never have happened” and pointed to delays in military modernization due to bureaucratic obstacles.

Investigation launched

The Defense Ministry announced that a full investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the crash and clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Second major crash in recent weeks

The incident comes weeks after another C-130 crash in Bolivia, which left more than 20 people dead, raising concerns about the safety of such aircraft in the region.
