New Delhi, April 3/Nationalturk – There has been no let up in attacks on women in India and in the fresh incident, men on bike threw acid on four sisters, causing burn injuries to them.

“Two unidentified men traveling on a motorcycle passed lewd remarks on four sisters and threw acid towards them at Kandhla town.in Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh, India’s largest State, last evening,” a police official said.

He said the victim sisters, who are all teachers and were returning home after attending exam duty, sustained burn injuries. “They were immediately rushed to a local hospital, where from the younger of the four sisters, who had received major burn injuries, was referred to Ganga Ram hospital in Delhi (Indian capital) for specialized treatment”.

A senior police officer said police have registered a case and launched massive manhunt to track down the persons responsible for the acid attack.

“No arrests have been made yet,” he said adding motive behind the crime was unclear.

According to legal experts, acid attackers can be jailed for 8-12 years depending on the injuries inflicted, but the offence is bailable.

Attacks on women in India especially in Delhi have increased since December 2012 brutal gang rape and assault on a 23-year-old medical student in a moving bus by six persons. The victim girl two weeks later died in Singapore hospital.

The brutal gang rape outraged India with people from different walks of life staging protest demonstrations and demanding capital punishment to the rapists.

Tourism hit, foreign tourists arrival down by 25%

Owing to repeated and continued assaults on women in India, the foreign tourist inflows into India have registered a 25-percent drop in the last three months of the year, according to a survey by the Assocham Social Development Foundation (ASDF).

It said India’s tourism industry has primarily been impacted by deteriorating safety and security standards. “Inbound foreign tourists have opted for other Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam. The situation has been further aggravated by advisories issued by various countries to their citizens visiting India to be cautious and avoid the country if possible,” it said.

The survey disclosed that from December 2012 onwards, the inflow of women foreign tourists in India dropped 35 percent and, overall tourism had fallen by 25 percent.

“Nearly 72 percent of tour operators said in the last three months there had been a number of travel cancellations especially by women foreign tourists, mainly from UK, US, Canada and Australia,” added ASDF.
