Pedro Sánchez: The world’s problems cannot be solved with bombs

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said his country opposes war and what he described as the “collapse of international law,” speaking after US President Donald Trump threatened to end trade with Spain.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the nation after US President Donald Trump warned that Washington could cut off trade with Spain over Madrid’s stance on the Iran conflict. In his remarks, Sánchez said Spain firmly opposes war and criticized what he called the erosion of international law in global politics.

“No to the violation of international law”

Sánchez stressed that conflicts cannot be resolved through military force and warned against repeating past mistakes.

“No to the violation of international law. No to the idea that the world’s problems can only be solved through bombs and conflicts. And finally, no to repeating the mistakes of the past. In short, we are against war.”

References to Iraq, Gaza and Ukraine

The Spanish leader also referred to past and ongoing conflicts, including the wars in Iraq, Gaza and Ukraine, arguing that such conflicts have increased global insecurity.

“The Iraq War began an era of insecurity. The Iran war has made the world an even more dangerous place. We are against this catastrophe. This war will not bring about a more just international order.”
