Two men from Saxony died in a plane crash in Lower Bavaria. The crashed microlight was found early Wednesday morning in a forest near Neureichenau (Freiung-Grafenau district), a police spokesman said. Any help came too late for the 69-year-old pilot and his 80-year-old companion.

The men had already started in Dresden on Tuesday morning. They wanted to fly to Wels in Austria. In the evening, the relatives informed the Dresden police because they had lost contact with the occupants of the plane. The police in Saxony then arranged for cell phone tracking to find the men. This pointed to the district of Altreichenau in the Bavarian Forest.

Time of crash still unclear

So the local police launched a huge search operation. With the forces of the mountain rescue service, the fire brigade and a rescue dog squadron, a search was carried out at night, and a police helicopter was also involved. The machine was discovered after midnight in a densely wooded area.

The exact time of the crash is still unclear. A police spokesman explained that it also had to be determined whether the men made a stopover on their way from Saxony to Austria. The cause of the crash has yet to be determined. The police and the public prosecutor’s office from Passau are now investigating the crash.
