She is charged with “propaganda against the regime”: The Iranian judiciary has the reporter Saba Asarpeik now released for a payment of just under 50,000 euros.

After nearly three months in detention, the Iranian judiciary has the dissident journalist Saba Asarpeik released on bail. The amount was set at the equivalent of almost 49,000 euros, her lawyer Mahmud Alisadeh Tabatabaiha was quoted by the official news agency Irna. Asarpeik is therefore alleged to have operated “propaganda against the regime”.

The journalist who had reported in Iran, among other things for the reformist daily newspaper “Etemad” from the Iranian Parliament, was arrested in late May in her home. Already in January 2013 Asarpeik had been arrested along with 18 other journalists for several weeks.

The Iranian President Hassan Rohani as moderate in force in favor of a more tolerant line in social, cultural and media issues. Nevertheless, the justice of the land went into the last few weeks again strengthened against critical journalists. Only in July were three journalists, including a correspondent for the newspaper “Washington Post”, arrested.
